I’m getting a lot of shit because I said words like stupid and idiot are ableist.

I was told these were ableist words by those who are disabled, so therefore I take their word for it. I listen to them and I stop using them. I suggest you all do the same.

If someone of an oppressed group tells you a word is -ist in any way you respect that and try to refrain from using such words. It’s not that difficult. It’s simple privilege/oppression understanding.

I really try not to use these words but I know that I slip. I’m working on it. 

I slip too, mainly when I’m speaking. I’m trying. It isn’t easy but I’m gonna try replacing those words.

If you are planning on participating, make sure your last tumblr post the night beforehand is “BRB Blackout”, so people know why you are gone. Also, please reblog this post so that as many people as possible know when the blackout starts.

Whatever your respective time zones are is when to start. there is no specification.

What is the blackout?:

A day. A single day where you don’t use tumblr. No logging in. No checking it. I know it’s hard being cut off from your community for a day, but a single day, but by refusing to use or look at Tumblr, you are making a powerful collective dent that will (ideally) inspire Tumblr mods to consider that these changes are hurting and upsetting us. You are telling them that that we were very happy with many of the old features that we once had. This is a respectful silent protest.

Why a blackout:

Because social media websites, whether for profit or not, use numbers to determine whether or not their website is successful. Tumblr is a popular, ever growing website with a loyal userbase, so no matter how much the tumblr staff ruins the website, the hit numbers will continue to grow. Making a dramatic dent in that is the only way to really get our point across and demand to be heard. We are essentially making a statement that says “we are not happy with the changes that you have made, it is your users that makes your site successful, please listen to us”

I’m not proposing that we seek out and gun down everybody who works for and maintains tumblr. I don’t think asking people to go outside or hang out with their friends for a day is being terribly reactionary or overly aggressive. For many of us, Tumblr is a home away from home where we talk to people who share our weird interests. I think we have a right to ask that it runs in the most user friendly way possible. I also refuse to congratulate Karp for “not making us pay” for Tumblr. Most social media websites do not require payment, and many still listen to their users. A good example is Reddit, which is among the most popular websites on the internet and still works tirelessly to make sure that users are happy with the developments they make. 

Some of the negative changes make to Tumblr:

The banning of all follower tracker services. The changes and attacks on Missing E that have resulted in many features being taken away and may result in it’s permanent banning. Askboxes having character limits. Askboxes regularly eating messages that they see as spam. Askboxes not allowing us to post links or use the enter key. David Karp responding to these problems by basically saying “let them eat cake”. The Tumblr sidebar being taken away.

Tumblr is not very good about organizing itself or taking action. Most people on tumblr will happily reblog something, but totally avoid actually going out of their way to get things done. 

Most recently, Tumblr has destroyed our messaging system, told us that our conversations were not askbox worthy, taken away our sidebars, and yesterday, once again attempted to take away/ruin missing E.

I would love to propose a tumblr blackout. A day where as many people as possible refuse to log into tumblr to let them know that they can’t keep ruining our website.

The problem right now is that we keep having these problems and instead of telling Karp to stick it, we all just groan about it and move on and try to adapt. Because there is no dip in userbase, the people who run Tumblr will do whatever they want. They don’t care about the users. They just care about the numbers…and because we keep using tumblr, they keep ruining it and getting away with it. 

I am 100% dead serious about taking a stand, but I don’t want to do anything official unless I know that at least 1K people are behind me. Ideally, many more…but I want to set the bar low for now. So if you actually want to show Karp that you won’t take these abuses laying down, please like this…or better yet, reblog it so other people will be notified. Once I know people are behind me, I will actually organize something. If this ends up being a flop, I guess it will be a flop. 

Mmm.

I can try and do this. I just need to remind myself to not use Tumblr. I’ll get schoolwork done :D

And let’s not forget the bullshit with the tags too.

okay. heart still hurts, but im gonna move passed it and be a big person and hear him out. cause im not a dumb hillbilly who only does what her parents tell her and what her parents believe. i’m going to make my own path and believe my own things and im gonna deal with whatever is thrown at me.
